The first step is for the patient and the dentist to agree the exact shade of white they aim to achieve. Then the patient's teeth are exposed and isolated so that the gums, lips and any other soft tissue is not exposed to the chemical gel that is to be applied to the teeth.

A chemical gel is then applied to each tooth. Once all teeth have been treated with the gel a special light is directed at close range to the teeth. This step is repeated about three times depending on the shade of white and how dark the teeth are to start.
