Proactiv acne treatment is a consumer-branded set of products to get rid of spots. Proactiv began a shift in thinking regarding the treatment of teenage acne.

Until 1994, when Proactiv was launched, most branded , over-the-counter acne skin care products were topical creams containing 5-10% concentrations of the bactericidal, benzoyl peroxide. Proactiv contains only 2.5% of the ingredient but also includes an exfoliant.

Proactive also sells a moisturiser that will counter the drying affects of the benzoyl peroxide. It has been proven clinically effective as a pimple treatment, but it has some side issues too. Approximately 5% of peopl are allergic to benzoyl perxode and may suffer redness, itching, hives, swelling, or a burning sensation.

Proactive sells a version of their products based upon salicylic acid instead of benzoyl peroxide for people allergic or sensitive to benzoyl peroxide.

There are now a variety of similar acne skin care products, or ?systems? as they are called, on the market. They all use the same approach of a milder 2.5% solution of benzoyl peroxide used with a non-clogging moisturiser. Though effective, they can all be costly. These ?systems? can cost $30-$70 USD per month!
