How to Get Rid of Spots: Glycolic Acid

Written by Administrator. Posted in Pimple Treatment

Believe it or not, glycolic acid has been used a lot longer as an industrial degreaser than it has as a way of getting rid of spots! In essence, glycolic acids are either acids based upon cane sugar or fruit acids such as citric acid.

When applied to the skin as part of an exfoliating cream or gel, glycolic acid genetrates the damaged upper layers and helps separate these from the living dermal layers beneath. As this dead skin is burned off by the glycolic acid, the other ingredients carry it away and rinsing with water neutralizes the remaining acid. The result is smoother skin and a more youthful appearance.

A secondary benefit of glycolic acid is it's ability to help draw moisturisers into the newly-treated skin.

Clinical studies show that creams or gels containing less than a 10% concentration to be practically useless. But most cosmetics firms producing these skin care products are afraid to make products above that level due to product liability concerns.

There are some lotions now containing up to 70% concentrations on the market. Like any new product you wish to use on your skin, it is advised you start with the lowest strengths first and increase tot he minimum point of effectiveness and see your acne dermatologist for advice on this and other ways regarding how to get rid of posts.
