If you have lost lots of weight you will undoubtedly be stuck with lots of excess skin, which can prevent you from obtaining the body you have always strived for. The good news is there is a way of improving the situation with what is called Body Contouring or Total Body Lift surgery...

Body Contouring is performed under general anaesthetic over several hours and can require several separate plastic surgery procedures to be carried out simultaneously, including tummy tuck, breast lift, arm lift and thigh lift, amongst others. The overall aim is to remove as much skin as possible to give you back the body you wanted.

To do this the surgeon will usually start by making an incision around the bottom of the stomach area and using this to tighten the abdominial muscles. A new hole will be created for the repositioned belly button and liposuction may also be performed to remove any excess fat. Drains will be placed also to help any excess fluid to seep away, but these will be removed after around 12 hours.

For the arm area lipo suction will be performed on the underneath of the upper arm to remove fat. The excess skin is then also removed and the incision stitched back together. This is the same for the thigh area and the two procedures can take up to four hours to complete, depending on the amount of fat and excess skin to be removed.

Our breast uplift surgery guide explains, in detail, what happens during this part of the Body Contouring or Total Body Lift procedures.

As you would expect from such an invasive set of plastic surgery procedures Body Contouring does create some pain, in the main because of swelling and bruising to the areas where skin has been moved or fat has been removed. You will be expected to stay in hospital for anything between a day and a week or more depending on the severity of the body lift procedure you underwent. Feeling may also be lost , or reduced, around the incision areas, although this should return over time. The main thing to keep an eye on it fluid build up during the first week or so, and your plastic surgeon will monitor it to ensure your body is healing properly.

Although all of this sounds like a real barrier the benefits will very often massively outweight the negative aspects of body countouring surgery and that is because movement and physical appearance will all be dramatically improved, allowing for more gym work and other fitness routines to be performed, which also helping you fit into those clothes you have always dreamt of wearing.

To benefit most from the total body lift surgery you really need to have had a steady body weight for a year or more after losing a large amount of weight, although your plastic surgeon will be able to advice.
